ERS International Congress 2021: highlights from the Interstitial Lung Diseases Assembly

Abstract

This article provides an overview of scientific highlights in the field of interstitial lung disease (ILD), presented at the virtual European Respiratory Society Congress 2021. A broad range of topics was discussed this year, ranging from translational and genetic aspects to novel innovations with the potential to improve the patient pathway. Early Career Members summarize a selection of interesting findings from different congress sessions, together with the leadership of Assembly 12 – Interstitial Lung Disease.

The importance of translational science within the respiratory field

“…To make translational science at the ERS more visible, translational tags were introduced to highlight these sessions and to attract the right audience. Previously, congress sessions were tagged as either basic or clinical to indicate the target audience of each session, as can be observed in previous congress highlights articles [40][41][42]. However, sessions that contain a mix of basic and clinical science are encouraged, as is research that is translational in nature.…”

“…Every year, early career members (ECMs) and Assembly officers summarize a selection of the scientific highlights presented at the ERS congress for the different groups of Assembly 12: group 12.01 "Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonias (IIPs)", group 12.02 "ILDs/diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLDs) of known origin", group 12.03 "Sarcoidosis and other granulomatous ILDs/DPLDs", and group 12.04 "Rare ILDs/DPLDs" (1,2). In this year's review article, we will focus on key results and take-home messages of translational and clinical research presented in oral presentation or thematic poster sessions.…”
