Erythropoiesis and Malaria, a Multifaceted Interplay

Abstract: One of the major pathophysiologies of malaria is the development of anemia. Although hemolysis and splenic clearance are well described as causes of malarial anemia, abnormal erythropoiesis has been observed in malaria patients and may contribute significantly to anemia. The interaction between inadequate erythropoiesis and Plasmodium parasite infection, which partly occurs in the bone marrow, has been poorly investigated to date. However, recent findings may provide new insights. This review outlines clinical… Show more

“…Lipoperoxidation end-product 4-HNE is slowly and continuously shed, provoking the adduction with functionally important proteins in immune cells [ 222 , 223 , 224 ]. This process leads to immunosuppression [ 218 , 219 , 225 , 226 , 227 ] and dyserythropoiesis [ 228 , 229 ] in the host.…”

“…It is not yet known which exact parasite-specific molecules directly mediate gametocyte sequestration, although multiple candidates have been proposed and investigated ( 10 14 ). In addition, it has also been shown that alterations in membrane deformability of the host erythrocyte and infection of erythroblasts by gametocyte-committed trophozoites (rings) in the bone marrow can contribute to gametocyte sequestration ( 15 , 16 ).…”

“…Five teams presented novel findings contributing to our understanding of erythropoiesis [5][6][7][8][9]. Six teams critically evaluated our current knowledge and defined novel innovative questions for future research [7,[10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…One of the strengths of this Special Issue is the broad range of topics covered. The articles in this Special Issue provide a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms that regulate erythropoiesis [6,7,10,14], the red cell physiology [8,9], and the interaction between erythroblast and mature RBC with pathogens [9,10]. Different aspects of RBC diseases [10,12,13] and RBC-related diseases [5,11] are analyzed in this Special Issue.…”
