Erythrothrombocytapheresis and Plasmathrombocytapheresis with Storage in T-sol of Platelets Collected by the New Amicus Cell Separator

Abstract: The Amicus cell separator is the latest apparatus introduced into the international market for high-yield, low WBC contamination and short-procedure time thrombocytapheresis. In its original configuration the apparatus collects platelets for subsequent resuspension in plasma and no collection of PRBC can be carried out along with thrombocytapheresis. In this paper we present the results of plasma-thrombocytapheresis and erythro-thrombocytapheresis after the adaptation of the Amicus to the collection and storag… Show more

“…The CEs of our DP collections comply well with published CEs for double PLT collections, ranging between 44 and 73% for different apheresis devices [23–31]. In the two studies reporting CEs for DP collections using the Dideco Excel apparatus and Baxter's AMICUS, the CEs were 52 and 69%, respectively [7,8]. Therefore, our results for TRIMA V4 fit well within this range.…”

“…In all storage media, P‐selectin expression on day 0 was similarly high, at 34–37%. Other authors collecting DPs at lower PLT concentrations (2500–4000 × 10 3 PLTs/µl) using TRIMA, the Dideco Excel apparatus, Baxter's AMICUS, or Baxter's CS3000‐Plus, reported lower P‐selectin expression rates on day 0, ranging between 4·5 and 7·8%[6–9]. However, as the type of measurement of P‐selectin expression can be very different, comparison between the results of different studies may be of limited value.…”

“…The Amicus cell separator was built to replace the CS 3000 device, which has been used over years for PBSC harvesting (Lasky et al ., 1989; Rosenfeld et al ., 1994; Lin et al ., 1995). First, the PLT collection was developed for the Amicus machine, and it showed a high PLT yield and collection efficiency (Burgstaler et al ., 1997; Valbonesi et al ., 1997; Yockey et al ., 1998; Moog & Müller, 1999). Now, a programme for mononuclear cell harvesting was developed, and the aim of the present study was to evaluate this programme for the collection of autologous and allogeneic PBSCs.…”

“…This last limitation is of particular relevance with the Amicus that, for its high collection efficiency, may be routinely employed for double plateletapheresis. We have adapted the Amicus for resuspension of the PC in a nonplasma medium, T-Sol, and for collection of red blood cells (RBC) [2]. Seventy-five donors (Group A) (35 men and 40 women) were enrolled for plasmaplateletapheresis, and 45 donors (Group B) (30 men and 15 women) for erythrothrombocytapheresis.…”
