“…This is most likely due to reduced friction between the membrane and the esophageal wall [30]. In the prospective randomized trial of expandable metal stents in the palliation of malignant esophageal obstruction at the gastroesophageal junction recently performed by Vakil et al [82], there was no significant difference in the incidence of stent migration (2/30 with uncovered stents as compared with 4/32 with covered stents; p = 0.44).…”

“…Stent insertion is a straightforward procedure associated with a negligible mortality and a low morbidity, and, in most patients, it rarely needs to be repeated. Moreover, placement of a metal stent across a tight stricture produces a virtually immediate and substantial improvement in swallowing [30][31][32].…”

“…[4][5][6] However, the failure of this endoluminal stent frequently occurred resulting from ingrowth and overgrowth of the device by tumor cells. [7][8][9][10][11] The overgrowth and ingrowth may result in restenosis and shortening the effective lifespan of the treatment. Moreover, with this palliative treatment, long-term survival cannot be expected, because proliferation and growth of malignant cells cannot be inhibited.…”

“…Overall migration rates of covered stents have been reported to be 5% to 32%, 3,[7][8][9][10][11] and migrated stents may induce serious problems such as luminal obstruction or perforation of the bowel. 12 Recently, we designed a novel, fully covered SEMS that resists migration (Hanarostent Skidpoof; M.I. Tech Co Ltd, Pyeongtaek, Korea).…”
