Esophageal Gland Duct Adenoma: Immunohistochemical Comparison With the Normal Esophageal Gland and Ultrastractural Analysis

Abstract: Esophageal gland duct adenomas are extremely rare tumors. Here, we report the case of a 75-year-old Japanese man who had undergone total gastrectomy for advanced gastric cancer. Esophageal gland duct adenoma was incidentally found in the lower esophagus. It appeared to be detached from the site of gastric cancer and was well demarcated without a capsule. Histologic analysis revealed papillary and cystic structures mainly comprising eosinophilic cells with minimum nuclear atypia. Immunohistochemical analysis re… Show more

“…Antibodies to CK19, p63, smooth muscle actin (SMA)[42], and Ki67 (MIB-1) were used in the dilutions shown in the Supplemental Tables. The Bond Polymer Refine Detection Kit (using a DAB chromogen; Leica Microsystems, Bannockburn, IL) was used as a secondary visualization system.…”

“…1 Although they appeared to vary in number and/or distribution among individuals, prior studies noted that SMGs clustered at either the proximal or distal esophagus, organizing into longitudinal rows parallel to the long axis of the organ. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Series study focusing on histopathological features of this lesion has not been reported. It was usually described in case reports and named variously.…”

“…Therefore, normal esophageal gland and ducts demonstrated similar immunoreactive patterns as in the breast, prostate, salivary gland and others. Glandular duct adenomas of the esophagus also accompanied myoepithelial cells [10]. However, esophageal cardiac glands did not necessarily contain the myoepithelial cells, consistent with negative immunoreactivity for p63 or CK5/6.…”
