Essential metrics for assessing sex & gender integration in health research proposals involving human participants

Abstract: Integrating sex and gender in health research is essential to produce the best possible evidence to inform health care. Comprehensive integration of sex and gender requires considering these variables from the very beginning of the research process, starting at the proposal stage. To promote excellence in sex and gender integration, we have developed a set of metrics to assess the quality of sex and gender integration in research proposals. These metrics are designed to assist both researchers in developing pr… Show more

“…In addition, as observed with exercise participation in the general population, there was a substantially lower proportion of women participating in the studies included in this review as compared to men. Future research should focus on trial designs and enrolment procedures that will encourage and facilitate the enrolment of more female participants as well as the development of strategies to increase physical activity behavior in female dialysis patients …”

“…Future research should focus on trial designs and enrolment procedures that will encourage and facilitate the enrolment of more female participants as well as the development of strategies to increase physical activity behavior in female dialysis patients. 41 In conclusion, although evidence for the benefits of exercise to HRQOL is accumulating, research characterizing the effects of exercise on other PROs in dialysis is scarce. Patients on dialysis and their caregivers have identified the importance of addressing PROs such as dialysis-related symptoms, quality of life, functional status, ability to work, and disability as research outcomes in future studies.…”

“…In terms of developing approaches in keeping with integrated knowledge translation (iKT) principles, a comprehensive metric for assessing sex-and-gender integration in research projects has been developed by Day et al (2017) that includes detailed scales on data analysis, data reporting, KT planning and patient engagement.…”

“…Considering sex and gender may add to our understanding and lead to the development of more tailored interventions specific to the needs of women and men. 10,11 The studies by Shmuel 4 and Cil 5 and colleagues both demonstrate an association between drug prescribing and frailty. Yet, we are still left with a chicken or egg scenario, not knowing whether drug therapy or frailty came first.…”
