Essential Oil Composition, Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activities of Two Endemic Stachys Cretica Subspecies (Lamiaceae) from Turkey

Abstract: The chemical compositions of the water-distilled essential oil of Stachys cretica ssp. lesbiaca Rech. fil. and S. cretica ssp. trapezuntica Rech. fil. were determined by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 63 compounds were identified. The sesquiterpene hydrocarbon, germacrene D (20.3% and 12.9% respectively) was the main component identified in both oils. Furthermore, ethanol, light petroleum, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts prepared from the aerial parts of the plants were tested for their antimic… Show more

“…Cytotoxicity of different extracts of Stachys species in human cancer cell lines reported in the literature are given in Table 2 for the sake of comparison with the toxicity of S. pilifera . It can be concluded from Table 2 that the alkaloid and terpenoid fractions of S. pilifera have a lower IC 50 and a higher efficiency than those observed with the extracts of Stachys species in human cancer cell lines( 33 34 35 ).…”

“…Moreover, some species are reported in ethnomedicine as anti-fever, antidiarroheal, and for treatment of weaknesses of the heart and liver, and have shown a variety of activities (anti-allergic, anti-anoxic, antibacterial, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, antinephritic, antioxidant, antihepatitis and choleretic), confirming a wide variety of ethnomedicinal tradition [17]. In literature, the cytotoxic activity of different Stachys species and their essential oils against several cancer cell lines has been reported [18][19][20].…”

“…The GC/MS and GC-FID analyses were carried out under experimental conditions similar to those reported earlier [5]. Identification of the EO components was carried out by comparison of their relative retention times with those of authentic samples, computer matching against commercial (Wiley GC/MS Library, MassFinder 3 Library) [14,15] and inhouse "Başer Library of Essential Oil Constituents", as well as MS literature data [16,17].…”
