Environmental history, as a field of analysis and transdisciplinary study, aims to explore the interactions between society and ecosystems from a deep understanding of how relationships between human groups and natural systems change over defined periods of time. This article seeks to delve into the environmental history of the savannahs of the Cesar department in Colombia, documenting the milestones in the privatization of the commons and the degradation of social–ecological systems. Methodologically, satellite images and aerial photographs are analyzed to determine the changes in land cover that reveal the state of the ecosystems, and an ethnographic approach is used to document the perception and valuation of local Afro-descendant communities in the region. The article shows how, over the last 60 years, land-use planning models have favored individual appropriation practices and agroindustrial models over collective forms of pastoralism and small-scale agrifood systems. It also documents the main socio-ecological impacts and the conflicts implicit in different tenure models that should be taken into account in the various public policies related to sustainability, peace building, and the recognition of territorial rights in the Colombian Caribbean.

Forage legumes such as Leucaena leucocephala, besides being a rich source of protein for animal feed, its inclusion in silvopastoral systems provides fundamental components to improve soil properties. These plants have the ability to establish symbiotic association with the genus Rhizobium sp. and fix biologically atmospheric nitrogen favoring growth and development, being reflected in production increases. The objective of this research was to evaluate the capacity of native isolates of Rhizobium sp. and a commercial strain in biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in L. leucocephala plants. Two separate bioassays to evaluate the efficiency of the FBN of the native isolates and the commercial strain under greenhouse conditions, followed by a randomized complete block design with 7 x 2 factorial arrangement, seven treatments, two factors: native isolates and commercial strains and bacterial concentrations (106 and 108 cells.ml-1), with three repetitions and five experimental units. The first bioassay was carried out with seeds, determining the percentage of germination, the length and thickness of the stem, number of leaves, dry weight of the aerial part, number of nodule/plant and the percentage of nitrogen accumulated in the area part of the plant. In the second bioassay with 30-day-old seedlings, the same variables of the first bioassay were determined, with the exception of the percentage of germination. In the first bioassay, a greater stimulation was found in the germination of L. leucocephala seeds at a concentration of 108 cells.mL-1. Regarding stem length and thickness, accumulated dry matter, leaf development and nitrogen accumulation, better results were found in the treatments with the native isolates L27, L36 and L38 in a concentration of 106 cells.mL-1 above the commercial strain in concentration of 108 cells.mL-1. The native isolates of Rhizobium sp. exert a positive effect on the FBN and the germination of plants of L. leucocephala, which will allow to conduct future field studies that allow to potentiate the culture of L. leucocephala and silvopastoral systems for bovine feeding.

La importancia de las propiedades físicas del suelo influye de manera apreciable en su funcionamiento, calidad del agua, control climático, ciclo de los nutrientes y biodiversidad, entre otros. Estas proporcionan más funciones ecosistémicas que solamente el aporte nutricional para la producción agrícola. Actualmente, el suelo está sometido a presión de manejo para la producción de alimentos, energía y materia prima y esto ha llevado a su deterioro físico y degradación. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar los efectos de la densidad aparente y el tamaño de agregados de suelo de sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP) (proveniente de pasturas del bosque seco tropical) sobre el crecimiento del pasto guinea (Megathyrsus maximus) cv. Mombasa. Para tal fin, se realizaron dos experimentos separados bajo condiciones de invernadero, estableciendo valores crecientes a cada variable a través de ejercer fuerzas mecánicas (densidad aparente: 0.93-1.80 Mg m-3) y tamizado (tamaño medio de agregados: 0.125-7.15 mm) y luego se sembraron semillas del pasto y se dejaron crecer por 30 días. Se encontraron dos modelos funcionales que relacionan la biomasa de las raíces del pasto con el valor de la densidad aparente y con el tamaño medio de agregados del suelo. Se concluye que para ambas variables se detectan modelos de regresión cuadrática, es decir, de punto óptimo; siendo estos valores óptimos para la densidad aparente de 1.0 Mg m-3 y de tamaño de agregados de 1.5-2.0 mm. Estos parámetros podrían ser utilizados como indicadores físicos en el diagnóstico de la salud del suelo y de utilidad en el establecimiento de pasturas de la región del Valle del Rio Sinú.
