Human-wildlife negative interactions are a recurring phenomenon worldwide, originating from the shared habitats and resources between both. In several coastal communities, negative interactions occur due to the presence of the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus). We have developed an index to assess the level of vulnerability of communities to this reptile. The construction of this index is based on the Approximate SustainabilityIndex developed by Gutiérrez-Espeleta in 1994. The Index of Vulnerability (IVU) is built upon several indicators across four parameters: social, biological-environmental, institutional, and spatial. These indicators are assessed using a performance scale and interpretation. The IVU assigns values to the vulnerability condition, which are presented in a color scale corresponding to defined intervals. For each indicator, reference categories and rating scales are represented with traffic light colors and numerical ratings. The IVU value obtained for a community can be visualized with a map and a corresponding figure, including a table of values for the assessed parameters.

Grieving geographies are spaces of complex collective loss due to multiple interconnected forms of violence. Engaging with critical race theory, feminist geography and anthropology, and political ecology, this paper explores the intersections of gender, race, and the environment in Mexico. Black and Indigenous women in the Coast of Oaxaca grieve for the lagoons that are dying in front of them due to governmental and neoliberal policies, but also for the loss of members of their communities due to violence. I argue that facing the slow death of their lagoons system, plus everyday forms of violence, Black and Indigenous women organize to defend life, livelihood, and the lagoons in their community. These women have created everyday practices of resistance and alternative economies based on care and solidarity. This article explores environmental racism in Latin America, specifically where mestizaje ideology was imposed, and the affective relationship between human and other‐than‐human beings.

Crocodile attacks in Oaxaca, Mexico: An update of its incidences and consequences for management and conservation

Human-crocodile conflicts in Mexico often have a political dimension due to public safety. The aim of this work was to update analyses of the incidence of crocodile attacks on humans in Oaxaca and to identify patterns or trends that could have relevance to future conflict mitigation. We compiled attack records from 2004 to 2017. The highest proportion of attacks (64%) and deaths (12%) occurred on the northwest coast in two periods of the year related with the nesting and rainy seasons. No differences existed between the seasons in the number of crocodile attacks and the mean number of attacks between years. The attacks were related with fishing activity (40%); male victims (92%) were more common than female, and a higher proportion of fatal cases of victims were children (< 10 years). We recommended essential baseline surveys and suggested public education about crocodile awareness and risks.
