Estimates of soil losses by the erosion potential method in tropical latosols

Abstract: Water erosion is one of the main problems faced in coffee cultivation, as it promotes environmental degradation and crop yield decrease. Erosion estimates support the planning of conservation management practices and allowing determining the rates of soil losses. Thus, the objective of this paper was to estimate the soil loss by water erosion using the Erosion Potential Method in a sub-basin predominantly covered by coffee cultivation and then to compare the results with the Soil Loss Tolerance limits. The stu… Show more

“…The EPM is an empiric model, of easy utilization, implementation capacity with Geography Information System (GIS) and application low cost (Efthimiou et al, 2017). The EPM is the largest applied to identification of the high vulnerability areas to erosive process, and recently this method was adapted to brazilian tropic conditions (Efthimiou et al, 2017;Lense et al, 2019;Sakuno et al 2020;Tavares et al, 2019).…”

“…According to Didoné, Minella and Evrard (2017) an effective scenario for reducing water erosion included the implementation of protected forest areas, which was corroborated with the present study. In addition, as noted, coffee cultivation associated with conservation practices has the potential to reduce soil losses compared to annual crops such as corn (LENSE et al, 2019).…”

“…As perdas de solos, conforme Ayer et al (2015), Mendes Junior et al (2018 e Lense et al (2019), podem comprometer a capacidade produtiva dos solos. Assim, podem impactar diretamente a produção de alimentos e comprometer a segurança alimentar e nutricional da população.…”
