Software industry has adopted automated testing widely. The most common method adopted is graphical user interface test automation for the functional scenarios to reduce manual testing and increase the repeatability. Reducing execution time and redundancy to achieve quality “go/no go decisions” provides rational for the executive management to allocate funds to adopt automation and invest in the setup including people, process, and tools to achieve faster time to market. There are a variety of practices engaged by testers, like frameworks, tools, methods, procedures, models, and technologies to achieve automation. Nonetheless, the actual effectiveness in terms of return on investment (ROI) is not known, though there are various formulas to calculate ROI of test automation. The factors that determine the ROI are maturity of test automation, purpose, or intent, picking right tests for automation, knowledge of the tester to derive test coverage, domain expertise, defining right metrics like defects found by automation runs, cost versus reduction of time, labor versus quality of scripts, repeatability, and results. These factors form the base of the questions designed for the survey. The paper presents a survey and analysis to understand the ROI of test automation from industry test professionals from both product and services organizations.

For this reason, regression testing is required in order to revalidate the modifications in the software. It is an expensive process. Various techniques of performing regression testing are available. Software testers can select the technique that suit their requirement as well as optimize the basic cost and time factors. This paper mainly discusses various test case prioritization techniques for regression testing presented by various researchers and the various search algorithms used in the test case prioritisation process.

At first, the core ideology, advantage and principle of Software Testing Automation Framework (STAF) are presented in this paper. Several automated testing frameworks are summarized and analyzed. In addition, date driven automation test framework is given more attention. Test script is the important composing part of software test automation. Then this paper introduces several technologies of script along with their characteristics. Every technology applies to different places. Moreover, an automated test system with an automated test script language XML which is implemented to solve the problems in current automatic testing solutions. The design and implantation of the test script automation framework based on apache ant is put forward. The proposed key technology details of framework are also introduced. We take the automation test methodology of database connectivity operations by ODBC data source as example for validation, using auto test script as the key technology. Finally, the results demonstrate that it can best increase software test effectiveness and reduce workloads as well as save more efforts
