The purpose of the paper is to study multicultural competency training future tourist support specialists (guides) in the higher educational institutions. Multicultural competency training is defined as ways of teaching and educating aimed at developing multicultural competency. It may include: creating awareness of one's cultural worldview, stereotypes and biases; deepening knowledge of different cultural practices and views; understanding and understanding that cultural and linguistic differences can affect communication; understanding why and how communication and behaviour should be adapted in different cross-cultural situations; how to work effectively and respectfully with people of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds; highlighting the benefits of diversity in the workplace or in society more broadly; creating plans and strategies for developing organisational multicultural competency, such as multicultural access and equity or hiring policy plans. At the university organisational level, developing multicultural competency requires clear and practical policies and procedures, as well as a commitment to implementation and evaluation to create a workplace that evaluates and matches cultural and linguistic diversity.

Performing migratory journeys comes with energetic costs, which have to be compensated within the annual cycle. An assessment of how and when such compensation occurs is ideally done by comparing full annual cycles of migratory and non-migratory individuals of the same species, which is rarely achieved. We studied free-living migratory and resident barnacle geese belonging to the same flyway (metapopulation), and investigated when differences in foraging activity occur, and when foraging extends beyond available daylight, indicating a diurnal foraging constraint in these usually diurnal animals. We compared foraging activity of migratory (N = 94) and resident (N = 30) geese throughout the annual cycle using GPS-transmitters and 3D-accelerometers, and corroborated this with data on seasonal variation in body condition. Migratory geese were more active than residents during most of the year, amounting to a difference of over 370 h over an entire annual cycle. Activity differences were largest during the periods that comprised preparation for spring and autumn migration. Lengthening days during spring facilitated increased activity, which coincided with an increase in body condition. Both migratory and resident geese were active at night during winter, but migratory geese were also active at night before autumn migration, resulting in a period of night-time activity that was 6 weeks longer than in resident geese. Our results indicate that, at least in geese, seasonal migration requires longer daily activity not only during migration but throughout most of the annual cycle, with migrants being more frequently forced to extend foraging activity into the night.

In this paper, we propose a new approach based on the fitting of a generalized linear regression model in order to detect points of change in the variance of a multivariate-covariance Gaussian variable, where the variance function is piecewise constant. By applying this new approach to multivariate waveforms, our method provides simultaneous detection of change points in functional time series. The proposed approach can be used as a new picking algorithm in order to automatically identify the arrival times of P- and S-waves in different seismograms that are recording the same seismic event. A seismogram is a record of ground motion at a measuring station as a function of time, and it typically records motions along three orthogonal axes (X, Y, and Z), with the Z-axis being perpendicular to the Earth’s surface and the X- and Y-axes being parallel to the surface and generally oriented in North–South and East–West directions, respectively. The proposed method was tested on a dataset of simulated waveforms in order to capture changes in the performance according to the waveform characteristics. In an application to real seismic data, our results demonstrated the ability of the multivariate algorithm to pick the arrival times in quite noisy waveforms coming from seismic events with low magnitudes.
