Forest farming is an agroforestry practice defined as the intentional cultivation of nontimber forest products (NTFPs) underneath a forest canopy. Forest farming perspectives and preferences among family forest owners are generally understudied, particularly in Appalachia, where many marketable native NTFPs species are found. We surveyed Appalachian family forest owners in fourteen Southwest Virginia counties about their interest in forest farming and likelihood of leasing land for this purpose. We also asked about the owner’s residency and historical connection to the region as well as contemporary land uses, and identified the following types of uses: absentee and vacationers, newcomers, longtime farming residents, and longtime nonfarming residents. We mailed 1,040 surveys and 293 were returned (28.9%). Forty-five percent were interested or extremely interested in forest farming and 36% were likely or extremely likely to lease land. Rates of interest in forest farming and leasing were similar across owner types, suggesting broad appeal among family forest owners. Study Implications Forest farming of nontimber forest products (NTFPs) and leasing forestland for this practice is broadly appealing across diverse family forest owners in Appalachia. Opportunities to scale profitable forest farming are on the rise, potentially improving family forest management and spurring regional economic development. Study results indicate there is a critical mass of family forest owners interested in forest farming who could potentially supply cultivated NTFPs. Forest management professionals and stakeholders would benefit from considering how they can assist family forest owners who are interested in forest farming.

Introducción: La valoración económica de los servicios ecosistémicos que brindan los bosques es un esfuerzo necesario para el manejo sostenible de los ecosistemas forestales.Objetivo: Estimar el valor económico de uso directo expresado a través de los productos forestales no maderables (PFNM) del Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná, Paraguay.Materiales y métodos: El estudio se llevó a cabo en una parcela permanente de monitoreo de 1 ha y se utilizó el método directo de precios de mercado. Las especies no maderables se identificaron y se clasificaron de acuerdo con sus usos, se priorizaron según su importancia comercial y se aplicaron precios referenciales del mercado nacional.Resultados y discusión: Se identificaron 36 especies con posibles usos no maderables (medicinal, ornamental, alimenticio y artesanal), entre las cuales se priorizaron: Didymochlaena truncatula (Sw.) J. Sm., Miltonia sp., Oeceoclades maculata (Lindl.) Lindl., Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (Schott. ex Endl.) Sakur., Calazans & Mayo, Billbergia nutans H. Wendl. ex Regel, Acianthera sp. y Chusquea ramosissima Lindm. La categoría medicinal fue la mejor representada (71 %). El valor económico de los PFNM priorizados con usos ornamentales y precios de mercado por unidad fue 2 270 USD∙ha-1.Conclusiones: El valor económico de los PFNM del Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná constituye un monto de referencia que representa el rol importante de los productos no maderables en el manejo sustentable de los bosques tropicales.

Assessing changes in ecosystem service provision in the Bia-Tano forest reserve for sustained carbon mitigation and non-timber forest products provisionThe Millennium Ecosystem defined ecosystem services as "the benefits people derive from ecosystems". Besides provisioning services or goods like food, wood and other raw materials, plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms, ecosystem sevices provide essential regulating services such as pollination of crops, prevention of soil erosion, water purification and a vast array of cultural services, like recreation and a sense of place. Forest ecosystems also provide numerous services, benefits, and goods that benefit human wellbeing and mitigate carbon emissions. In many developing countries, forest ecosystem services serve as a vital means of providing food, reducing poverty and creating employment. This study uses GIS and satellite images to assess the changes in forest ecosystem services in the Bia-Tano forest reserve from 1990 to 2020. The purpose was to ascertain how human interventions and activities have contributed to the decrease in the service provision of Bia-Tano forest reserveʼs ecosystem services. We argue that LULC (Land Use Land Cover) changes affect the potential of the forest reserve to provide numerous products and services to benefit fringe communities and carbon mitigation. In all two sets of Classified Land Use Land Cover Images (CLULCI) co-vering the years 1990, 2000, 2011 and 2020 for the Bia-Tano forest reserve and surrounding areas and CLULCI for the actual forest reserve using the same years. The findings further revealed that the fringe communityʼs livelihood activities have contributed to the decrease in the quality and quantity of the forest reserve over the past 30 years, with closed forest decline, while built-up areas, barren areas, planted/cultivated areas and open forest continue to increase. Furthermore, the excessive exploitation of natural resources from the reserve, coupled with illegal encroachment, and frequent access to timber and fuelwood, threaten the conservation of the reserveʼs biodiversity and sustainability of ecosystem services. The findings show inadequate forest governance mechanisms to conserve and protect the reserve from further degradation and depletion of the reserve's resources. The livelihoods of fringe communities depend on the sale and consumption of NTFPs (Non-Timber Forest Products) from the reserve. Hence the changes in the forest reserves cover vegetation will reduce the NTFPs collected/harvested by fringe communities to support their livelihoods and wellbeing. Therefore, there is the need to tighten and strengthen the governance processes and mechanisms through participatory governance and enforcement of the rules and regulations to sustainably conserve and protect the reserve from deforestation and forest degradation.
