Estimating the value of forests for provisioning non-timber forest products to market: concepts, approaches, and case studies

Abstract: We discuss the process of estimating the ecosystem service value (ESV) for provisioning of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) to market, with a focus on the United States. NTFPs are harvested throughout the U.S. for numerous purposes, and those sold in market contribute significantly to household and local economies. While estimates of ESV can aid decision-making related to conservation and management, NTFPs have been generally neglected. We discuss challenges and approaches for prioritizing valuation, quantif… Show more

“…This percentage is higher than rates of interest in forest farming observed in northern Florida (40%), Missouri (38.6%), and Pennsylvania (38.6%) (Workman et al 2003, Strong and Jacobson 2005, Barbieri and Valdivia 2010. In terms of land base, interested or highly interested owners accounted for 46.6% of the forested acreage among all respondents, which could mean a significant amount of land available for forest farming of NTFPs and the potential for adding value to the forests of Appalachia (Frey et al 2020).…”

“…Regarding specific research on the economic valuation of NTFPs, Argentina has made progress in the estimation of the use of medicinal, food and dye plants (Sarmiento et al, 2020(Sarmiento et al, , 2022. Other examples are the study of Duchelle et al (2012) and Frey et al (2019) in Brazil and the United States, respectively, although there is scarce information on this type of research (Frey et al, 2019;Sarmiento et al, 2022). Small et al (2017) mention that the challenge of valuing non-material benefits remains.…”

“…Even in developed areas such as the eastern United States, people gather special forest products (SFPs) for consumption and sale to benefit their lives and livelihoods (Emery et al 2003). Generally, the collection and harvesting of NTFPs significantly contribute to many households in the United States and boost their local economies (Greenfield andDavis 2003 andFrey et al 2020). Thus, the NTFPs harvested from the United States forests are numerous, including plant materials and fungi, which are collected for personal enjoyment, commercial benefits, and spiritual and cultural importance (Chamberlain et al 2018).…”
