“…26 Some researchers have even suggested that the reference standard should be based on BMD measurement at the femoral neck and total hip. 30,31 However, considering the low prevalence rates of OP at the femoral neck site (17.2%) and total hip site (8.1%), which did not conform with rates in previous epidemiologic studies, 29 we applied the WHO criteria (28.4%) as the reference diagnostic standard in this study. A low prevalence according to the diagnostic criteria could increase the missed diagnosis of OP.…”

“…A recent systematic review reported that the prevalence of OP in Chinese women was 25.9%, which is much higher than that in men (5.30%). 29 In the current study, a total of 2055 participants were finally eligible out of 2488 individuals, and the prevalence of OP ranged from 8.1% to 28.4% according to the different criteria. With the WHO criteria, the prevalence rates of osteopenia and osteoporosis among Han Beijing postmenopausal women were 48.8% and 28.4%, respectively, which was basically consistent with previously reported rates.…”

“…In China, the prevalence of osteoporosis was 15.55% in 1990 and is predicted to reach 23.43% in 2050 among total older adults. 4 Osteoporosis is a complex and heterogeneous disease that is influenced by multiple risk factors, including age, sex, ethnicity, lack of physical exercise and dietary habits, amongst others. 5 Moreover, recent studies have suggested that genetic variation is considered to play a key role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis.…”

“…Among Chinese populations aged above 50 years old, the standardized prevalence of osteoporosis ranged from 5.04-7.46% in males and from 26. 28-39.19% in females from 1990 to 2050 [4]. The occurrence of osteoporosis increases with the aging of a population annually, which poses a serious global health burden and reduces quality of life.…”
