Estimation du risque d’introduction du virus de la fièvre de la vallée du Rift en Tunisie par le moustique Culex pipiens

Abstract: The mosquito Culex pipiens has been involved as vector of the West Nile virus in Tunisia. Its bio-ecological characteristics in combination with some environmental factors have favoured the emergence of this virus in a West-Nile free zone. This leads to question about the potential risk of introducing another arbovirus, the Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus, in Tunisia from neighbouring countries where RVF circulates. In this study, we have evaluated the vector competence of different populations of Cx. pipiens to… Show more

“…The Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes are known to be competent vectors of West Nile virus (WNV) and Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV). WNV has been circulating for a very long time in the Mediterranean region [ 1 4 ]. In Morocco, several outbreaks of WNV have been reported.…”

“…This in turn is leading to the spread of WNV [5, 6], as several recent studies have shown, which has become the most important arboviral disease in Tunisia. WNV is a flavivirus maintained in an enzootic cycle (bird-mosquito-bird transmission), that can lead to encephalitis/meningitis in humans and horses [7].…”

“…Widely spread in North Africa, Culex pipiens complex is a competent vector of several pathogens affecting human and/or animals such as WNV [5] and RVFV [6]. In Morocco, Culex pipiens mosquitoes have been strongly suspected as being the vectors of WNV during epizootics in 1996 with 42 dead horses [7–9] and in 2003 [10].…”
