Estimation of an earthquake focal mechanism from a satellite radar interferogram: Application to the December 4, 1992 Landers aftershock

Abstract: Using the interferometric fringes generated by the phase difference between a pair of synthetic‐aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the ERS‐1 satellite, we estimate the focal mechanism of a small, shallow thrust earthquake. The inversion procedure is an iterative, linearized least‐squares algorithm based on a standard elastic dislocation formulation for coseismic displacements. Our preferred estimate is a thrust focal mechanism with its hypocenter at (N34.35° ± 0.4 km, W116.91° ± 0.2 km, 2.6 ± 0.3 km depth… Show more

“…Geodetic inversions are a useful tool for estimating kinematic source parameters of earthquakes (e.g., Stein and Barrientos, 1985;Lin and Stein, 1989;Freymueller et al, 1994;Feigl et al, 1995;Yu and Segall, 1996;Wright et al, 1999;Reilinger et al, 2000). Using static surface displacements associated with a given earthquake researchers seek to better understand earthquake rupture processes by inverting for fault geometry and/or slip distributions.…”

“…LOS deformation maps have become a nearly routine source of information useful for deriving statically accumulated slip models along the fault plane Vol. 166, 2009 SAR Derived Coseismic 3-D Deformation (e.g., FEIGL et al, 1995;JONSSON et al, 2002). To obtain model parameters, geophysical optimization or inverse modelling is applied (TARANTOLA, 2005).…”

“…The near-fault coseismic surface deformation observed using geodetic techniques, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and/or Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), is commonly utilized as a significant constraint for fault slip model inversion (Okada, 1985;Massonnet et al, 1993;Feigl et al, 1995;Hao et al, 2009;Shen et al, 2009;Chen et al, 2010Chen et al, , 2012Wang et al, 2011Wang et al, , 2014Zhao et al, 2011;Qu et al, 2014). The inversion approach based on geodetic data can be approximately separated into two steps.…”
