Estimation of genetic parameters for morphological and functional traits in a Menorca horse population

Abstract: Functional conformation and performance in Classic and Menorca Dressage are the main selection criteria in the Menorca Horse breeding program. Menorca Dressage is an alternative Classical Dressage discipline which is exclusive of the Menorca Island, but including a series of movements that the animals perform in the traditional festivities called "Jaleo Menorquín". One of these movements involves the horse raising its forelimbs and standing or walking on its hindlimbs, which is called "el bot". To make the Men… Show more

“…A short depth in the pedigree may affect the reliability of estimated genetic parameters for the traits under analyses, but in our study, all animals had known parents, and 86% and 75% of the ancestors are known in the in the second and third generation, respectively. The limited amount of pedigree information is not uncommon in other horse breeds, which have nevertheless breeding programs underway (Stock and Distl, 2006;Bhatnagar et al, 2011;Solé et al, 2014).…”

“…However, there is a scarcity of research on genetic parameters estimation in local horse breeds, even though they could be used to create new genetic indices and be used to exploit the unique value of those breeds. Most of local horse population is facing the challenge to shift from agricultural to riding purposes (Bramante, Cito, Ciani, & Pieragostini, 2016;Giontella, Pieramati, Silvestrelli, & Sarti, 2018;Solé, Cervantes, Gutiérrez, Gómez, & Valera, 2014). The Bardigiano horse represents exactly this scenario since it is an old Italian horse breed and nowadays mainly used for equestrian purposes.…”
