Estimation of global solar radiation, sunshine hour distribution and clearness index in Enugu, Nigeria

Abstract: The concept of solar energy and its applications in this present day world would come to be one of the solutions to our present Nigerian problem of instability and epileptic power supply. In the study, the baseline data for mean monthly sunshine hours () S and global solar radiation () H for Enugu (6.7 0 N, 7.6 0 E) were obtained from the Nigeria Metrological Agency (NIMET), Oshodi Lagos Nigeria and spanned 1996 to 2010. The data for global solar radiation were measured with a Gunn-Bellani radiometer. The aver… Show more

“…His results indicate that these error estimators range from 5.40% to 11.19% at the study sites. Adeniji et al [31] estimated global solar radiation from the distribution of sunshine hours and the brightness index in Enugu (Nigeria). The authors then evaluated the margins of error between models and measurements and the values obtained did not exceed 2.5%.…”

“…Although most works carried out during the last decade utilized black-box models for their modelbased FDD approach, some researchers developed white-box models as well. Zhao et al [31], proposed a simplified physical-model based on the basic principle of a VCRS for the computation of performance indicators, of which the normalized heat transfer coefficient of the condenser Review of Condition Based Maintenance approaches for vapor compression refrigeration systems is used for fault detection. The residual threshold triggering the alarm is subsequently determined empirically based on the false alarm rate in the fault-free case.…”

“…There have been studies on global solar radiation at different locations in Nigeria [72,73,74,75,76,77]. Most of these locations use sunshine hours to evaluate the electrical energy that can be generated from the sun by taking note of the Global Solar Radiation G hi and the extra-terrestrial irradiance H o.…”

“…But it would be reflected from other sources. Where the sun's rays can reach some buildings or other sites on the earth, and then be reflected on the clouds or any other object before they reach our location on the earth (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh 2020, India et al 2012) (Adeniji et al, 2019). Global Horizontal Irradiance can be obtained by summing the previous two types of direct and diffuse radiation according to the equation GHI = DNI x Cos(θ) + DHI Where represents θ the angle between perpendicular to the arrival point of solar radiation and sun position at moment.…”
