Estimation of Standby Power Consumption for Typical Appliances

Abstract: In the past days, many consumers could simply unplug their appliances and go on holidays, assuming that their electricity meter would just stop. Standby power is a power consumed by an appliance when switched off or not performing its primary functions. Standby power consumption provides good oppourtunity for reducing both energy consumption and green house gas emissions. Through co-operation among governments, industry and consumers and the co-ordination of international policies, standby modes can be made mo… Show more

“…Turning off machines has been estimated to reduce total electricity use by 3%-12% per year. 20,21 Retrofitting LED bulbs from halogen bulbs has been estimated to reduce running costs for lighting by 80% per year and last up to ten times longer. 22 Up to 55% of the energy used in homes and businesses are for heating and cooling.…”

“…Indeed, appliances and their stand-by electricity usage increasingly take up a sizable chunk of household electricity. Depending on the appliance, stand-by electricity can consume up to 50% of the electricity usage of actual use [105]. Based on studies of Australian, US and Japanese households stand-by electricity ranges from 5 to 26% of total household electricity consumption (Guan et al, 2011, [45,111]).…”

“…However, once the heating cycle started, the power consumption of the microwave increased with respect to the settings selected by the user and was well above the power consumption of standby mode. The power window was selected through the survey of power profiles of various appliances reported in the literature [38][39][40][41][42][43] and by analysing the time domain appliance usage pattern from the House 1 REDD dataset.…”
