Estimation of Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity of Granular Soils from Particle Size Parameters

Abstract: Estimation of unsaturated hydraulic conductivity could benefit many engineering or research problems such as water flow in the vadose zone, unsaturated seepage and capillary barriers for underground waste isolation. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of a soil is related to its saturated hydraulic conductivity value as well as its water retention behaviour. By following the first author's previous work, the saturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention curve (WRC) of sandy soils can be estimated fro… Show more

“…As the soil void ratio increases, the permeability increases due to the expansion of the flow channel. Additionally, the relationship between soil permeability and void ratio shows nonlinear characteristics, which is consistent with previous studies [25,[36][37][38][39]. Based on the assumption made by the Kozeny-Carman model [22,25], the seepage paths through the soil can be simplified as many tortuous Poiseuille capillaries with a specific cross-sectional shape.…”

“…The high cost and effort of in situ measurements and the growing demand for such data have led scientists to seek alternative indirect methods [18,19]. In recent years, pedotransfer functions (PTFs) have become popular and have been used to estimate time-consuming and difficult-to-measure soil properties, such as Ks or soil water retention (pF) values [1,[20][21][22]. Ahuja et al [23], Rawls et al [24], Timlin et al [25], and Suleiman and Ritchie [26] proposed formulas for estimating Ks values based on the effective porosity.…”

“…Saturated hydraulic conductivity of crushed silica and Fujian sand were measured according to BS 1377‐5:1990, as 6.16 × 10 −4 m s −1 and 3.0 × 10 −7 m s −1 respectively. Based on the saturated hydraulic conductivity and estimated SWRC, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity functions of Fujian sand, crushed silica, and water‐repellent Fujian sand are determined by using van Genuchten–Mualem model (Wang et al., 2019), as summarized in Figure 5.…”
