“…Bonini et al, noted permanent visual loss in 6% of patients due to corneal complications and scarring. 7 Conjunctival scrapings showed eosinophils in 78% patients, this compares favourably with study done by Abelson et al who observed 63% conjunctival scrapings positive for eosinophils. 4 Another feature observed in this study regarding conjunctival eosinophils was the duration of the disease had an inverse effect on positive conjunctival eosinophils.…”

“…Of interest, estrogen and progesterone receptor mRNAs do not appear to be translated in the human conjunctiva or cornea, as shown by the absence of detectable receptor proteins following immunohistochemical procedures (Bonini et al 1995;Gans et al 1990). This lack of receptor protein raises questions as to how these sex steroids induce changes in the maturation, allergic responsiveness or goblet cell population of the conjunctiva (Imafidon & Imafidon 1992;Kramer et al 1990;Saruya 1968), or in the DNA synthesis, curvature, hydration, sensitivity or transplantability of the cornea (Imafidon & Imafidon 1992;Obenberger et al 1974;Ploc & Starka 1979;Waltman, et al 1971).…”
