Ethnic Segmentation, Western Education, and Political Outcomes: Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Society

Abstract: During the process of late Ottoman social transformation, why did the minorities try to separate themselves from the Ottoman state, and the Muslims to alter it? This article analyzes the Ottoman social structure, arguing that it was the preexisting Ottoman ethnic segmentation which, polarized in the nineteenth century by new structural and cultural contexts, led to such disparate political outcomes.
