Ethnographic and Case Study Approaches: Philosophical and Methodological Analysis

Abstract: In qualitative methods, there are various approaches that can be used to answer particular social questions, for example ethnography and case study. Two studies conducted by different researchers in China and Australia using these approaches were described and analysed in order to find out their similarities and differences in terms of philosophical and methodological perspectives, in the hope that it will provide an insightful contribution to a critical review of

“…To address the missing information, we have approached the field ethnographically (Eisenhart, 1988;Harwati, 2019), considering practices as cultural habits shown and reestablished in the interaction among the members of the community (Gitelman, 2006). This ethnographic approach is chosen because it is aligned with our aim to investigate "what people's opinions are about a particular phenomenon occurred in their social context and what their action is".…”

“…Focusing on the comment pool, we reconstruct the interaction activated by the memes from This is the Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology on 26 September 2020, available at https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0020739X.2020.1807069 inside the observed communities, considering the meaning-making processes. Because of the novelty of our topic, an instrumental case study that aims at theorizing through comparing cases is an appropriate approach (see Grandy, 2010), coherently combined with the ethnographic approach (Harwati, 2019). This case study follows the principle of comparison between two contrasting empirical cases, which represent polar types of mathematical memes, one being mathematically right and the other mathematically wrong.…”

“…This research is imprinted to an approach that merges ethnography (Eisenhart, 1988;Harwati, 2019) with grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967;Strauss & Corbin, 1998;Teppo, 2015). This methodological approach is well established in studies on memes (Czarnocha et al, 2016;Denisova, 2019;Katz & Shifman, 2017;Nissenbaum & Shifman, 2017;Stöckl et al, 2019), taking into account the fact that data are openly available in the field and do not come from structured experiments.…”

“…This study was a mini-, or focused, ethnography. Ethnography is a qualitative approach that studies culture to understand human behavior (Harwati, 2019). When an ethnography focuses on a narrow area of inquiry with limited time and money, it is a mini ethnography (Fusch et al, 2017).…”
