Ethylene functions as a suppressor of volatile production in rice

Abstract: We examined the role of ethylene in the production of rice (Oryza sativa) volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which act as indirect defense signals against herbivores in tritrophic interactions. Rice plants were exposed to exogenous ethylene (1 ppm) after simulated herbivory which consisted of mechanical wounds supplemented with the oral secretions (WOS) from the generalist herbivore larvae, Mythimna loreyi. Ethylene treatment highly suppressed VOCs in WOS-treated rice leaves, which was further corroborated by … Show more

“…A representative of aromatics, methyl salicylate (MeSA), was somewhat increased in the headspace by simulated herbivory (significant in Figure 3d), while it was also found in non‐treated plants, both internally and externally (Figure 1). This is consistent with our previous findings showing that 8–9 week‐old rice plants accumulate significant amounts of constitutive MeSA (Mujiono et al, 2020).…”

“…Solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) was used according to Mujiono et al (2020). Frozen leaves in 16 ml glass tubes were defrosted in ice to reduce enzyme activities, and spiked with 5 μl of tetralin (400 ng) in DCM as internal standard.…”

“…ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE PROTEIN 2/3 ( EIN2/3 ) are suppressed by ethylene, and EINs inhibit type A cytokinin response regulators in CK signalling pathway. Ethylene may also suppress monoterpene accumulation (Mujiono et al ., 2020). External stress factors characteristically induce jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA) and ABA syntheses, which often downregulate (red lines) routine growth signalling (e.g.…”

“…Rice, a popular staple food for nearly half of the world's population (Chen et al, 2012; U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 2017), has been having numerous studies carried out on how to effectively mitigate the deterioration of its quality during storage in recent years Mujiono et al, 2020). Wang et al (2018) fabricated a nano packaging material consisting of nano Ag, nano TiO 2 , nano attapulgite, as well as SiO 2 , which was capable of maintaining low oxygen and high CO 2 content in the package, inhibiting mold growth and fatty acid generation, decreasing lipase activity, and reducing the oxidation of lipid and protein.…”
