Abstract

Etude preliminaire d'un batiment au sud de Peglise orientale a Tocra Par Fuaad Bentaher*, avec une note de Catherine Dobias-Lalou** Sommaire Cet article presente un batiment meconnu a Tocra. Fouille en 1972, la structure etait d'abord interpretee comme deux edifices: une eglise et un Palais Byzantin. Un re-examen suggere qu'il s'agit d'un seul batiment a plusieurs phases, dont une etait peut-etre des bains. Une mosa'ique avec une texte chretienne indique un lien avec des activites chretiennes, mais ne prouve pas definitivement que le batiment etait une eglise.

Excavations at Tocra (1985-1992)

“…Most of the standing remains on land date from the Roman to early Islamic periods, but are not well understood. A building to the south of the east church has a Christian mosaic, but may originally have served as a set of baths or have had some other function (Bentaher 1999). The east and west churches are both thought to be sixth-century; a third church, outside the walls some 200 m west of the Berenice gate, is probably also of the sixth century.…”

Reburial of a mosaic floor discovered at Tocra (Taucheira)

“…At Tocra, the poor condition of and significant damage to this important polychrome mosaic, some 100 m south-west of the East Church, led the Department of Antiquities to call for an urgent intervention to protect it. The building occupies a whole insula and was excavated by Benghazi University but never published (Bentaher and Dobias-Lalou 1999). An apsed hall is located at the south-west corner of the building measuring 10.35 × 5.15 m and was furnished with four consecutive floor-levels: two of mosaic overlaid by two successive mortar floors (Stucchi 1975, 426–27).…”
