Eulerian-Eulerian Modeling of Disperse Two-Phase Flow in a Gas-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone

Abstract: This work presents a three-dimensional CFD study of a two-phase flow field in a Gas-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone (GLCC) using CFX4.3™, a commercial code based on the finite volume method. The numerical analysis was made for air-water mixtures at near atmospheric conditions, while both liquid and gas flow rates were changed. The two-phase flow behavior is modeled using an Eulerian-Eulerian approach, considering both phases as an interpenetrating continuum. This method computed the inter-phase phenomena by includi… Show more

“…The petroleum industry also employs gas-liquid cylindrical separators and study of these separators is ongoing. Reyes-Gutierrez et al 7) utilized the CFX4.3 software package from Ansys to analyze the free surface and tangential velocity inside a typical gas-liquid cylindrical cyclone separator as patented by the University of Tulsa in 1994. Both a single phase and two-phase simulation were used to compute the azimuthal velocity profile.…”

“…This oil drop diameter is in good agreement with experimental data, shown in [11], obtained at similar mixture velocities. The RNG κ-ε turbulence model was used since it has shown satisfactory results when comparing the speed of rotation of the mixture with experimental data [10]. The simulation runs were carried out in a Pentium IV 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM computer taking approximately 5 hours for each run.…”
