Eupatorium lindleyanum DC. sesquiterpenes fraction attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury in mice

Abstract: These results showed that EUP-SQT significantly attenuated LPS-induced ALI via reducing productions of pro-inflammatory mediators and decreasing the level of complement, indicating it as a potential therapeutic agent for ALI.

“…Furthermore, activated neutrophils act as signaling indicators to promote inflammatory response and enhance the production of additional cytokines in local and/or systemic levels [21]. MPO is involved in the microbicidal activity of neutrophils [22], and its activity reflects the activation and recruitment of neutrophils into lung [23]. As reported by others [24] and our present study, LPS caused ALI-like immune abnormality, which was evidenced by increased MPO activity and neutrophil counts.…”

“…Significant (for IL-1α and IL-1β) and moderate (for TNF-α) downregulation of cytokines after LPS challenge was reported for methanol, ethanol, and dichloromethane extracts of E. perfoliatum having eupafolin and a dimeric guaianolide as probable responsible compounds (Maas et al, 2011), the sesquiterpene fraction of E. lindleyanum (Chu et al, 2016), and 2-hydroxyeupatolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, widely found in the genus Eupatorium (Ke et al, 2017).…”

“…Several types of compounds have previously been obtained from E. lindleyanum, including sesquiterpenes [2][3][4][5][6][7], diterpenoids, triterpenoids, volatile oil, flavonoids, alkaloids, esters, and coumarins [8,9]. Pharmacological studies of the crude extract and constituents of E. lindleyanum revealed a variety of activities, including antihyperlipidemic [10], antioxidant [11], anticarcinogenic [12], and anti-inflammatory effects [13]. As part of our ongoing research program aimed at discovering plant-derived anti-inflammatory constituents, we found that the sesquiterpenes fraction (SQT) isolated by resin adsorbent chromatography from a water extract of E. lind-leyanum showed a strong inhibitory effect on mouse ear edema induced by xylene.…”
