Evaluación de hongos antagonistas de &lt;i&gt;botrytis cinerea&lt;/i&gt; pers., en plantaciones de mora, Costa Rica

The genus Paecilomyces is known for its potential application in the control of pests and diseases; however, its use in agriculture is limited to few species. Research interest in new formulations based on microorganisms for the control of pathogens is growing exponentially; therefore, it is necessary to study new isolates, which may help control diseases effectively, and to examine their compatibility with established agricultural control methods. We analysed in vitro and in vivo the antagonistic capacity of Paecilomyces variotii against seven phytopathogens with a high incidence in different crops, and we examined its compatibility with 24 commercial fungicides. P. variotii was applied in the following pathosystems: B. cinereal—melon, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum—pepper, R. solani—tomato, F. solani—zucchini, P. aphanidermatum—melon, M. melonis—melon, and P. xanthii—zucchini. The results showed strong control effects on M. melonis and P. xanthii, reducing the disease severity index by 78% and 76%, respectively. The reduction in disease severity in the other pathosystems ranged from 29% to 44%. However, application of metabolites alone did not cause any significant effect on mycelial growth of phytopathogens, apart from F. solani, in which up to 12% inhibition was observed in vitro when the extract was applied at a concentration of 15% in the medium. P. variotii was compatible with most of the tested fungicides, and of the 24 fungicides tested at the maximum authorised dose, 6 acted as fungicides, 4 as fungistatics, and the remaining showed inhibition rates ranging from 18.2% to 95.8%. These results indicate that P. variotii is a potential biological control agent to be used against several aerial and soil diseases, thus it should be integrated into modern pest management strategies.

Costa Rica es un país pequeño en la región centroamericana, con una reciente historia de investigación micológica. Sin embargo, algunas diferencias comparativas con otros países de la región biológica mesoamericana han promovido el estudio de los hongos y su integración con el manejo de los recursos naturales. Aun cuando todavía existe un sinnúmero de elementos por cubrir en Costa Rica, para una incorporación robusta de datos micológicos en la conservación y el desarrollo de agendas políticas sobre recursos naturales, algunas ventajas regionales han permitido que este país avance hacia tal objetivo más rápidamente que otros. Iniciativas de micoalfabetización y ciencia popular parecen ser los siguientes pasos para normalizar desequilibrios en la percepción sobre los hongos, que tienen diferentes regiones en Costa Rica, con el propósito de instar interacciones con estos organismos. No obstante, en términos generales, la sociedad costarricense parece estar más atenta al potencial de los hongos como fuente alimenticia y medicinal, al igual que a reconocer el rol de dichos organismos de facilitar servicios ecosistémicos. De esta forma, la conservación de hongos y su manejo parecen ser más fáciles de llevarse a cabo en este territorio que en otras áreas del mundo, donde mucho menos información sobre ellos ha llegado a la población general.

Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is a highly perishable fruit whose characteristics make it susceptible to developing microorganisms. Plant extracts have been studied as an alternative to pesticides to control spoilage microorganisms, responding to the expectation of the population seeking a healthier way of life. The fungus Botrytis cinerea is a facultative pathogen of vegetables, which can affect all stages of the development of several fruits, such as the strawberry, where it causes gray rot. Trichilia catigua (catuaba), Paullinia cupana (guarana), Stryphnodendron barbatiman (barbatimão), and Caesalpinia peltophoroides (sibipiruna) are planted in the Brazilian flora and have demonstrated pharmacological properties in their extracts. This work aimed to treat strawberries with a biodegradable film containing extracts of these species to evaluate strawberry conservation. There were notable distinctions in mass loss between the extract-treated and control samples. The pH, total acidity (TA), and soluble solids parameters exhibited consistently significant means across both sets of samples. Luminosity increased over the course of days in the color parameters, with the exception of strawberries coated with guarana. The red color showed greater intensity, except for those coated with barbatimão extract. Considering the results, it is possible to conclude that the coatings used can become an alternative to enhance the conservation of strawberries.
