Evaluating ambient conditions for solar chargers with the help of sensors on smartphones

Abstract: In this paper we investigated the opportunities to improve the energy collection of solar chargers with the help of sensors on smartphones. We focused on the information of the ambient light sensor and the accelerometer in order to find suitable positions for solar modules. In particular under indoor environmental conditions, the location and orientation of solar chargers is crucial. If users are able to allocate beneficial positions for their chargers, the amount of power from solar modules can be increased u… Show more

“…In this work, the decision was made to obtain measurement results with the help of portable light spectrum meters. Alternatively, the light intensity could also be obtained with ambient light sensors (ALS) within smartphones or interfaced with smartphones for example through near field communication (NFC) [8]- [10]. Generally speaking, it can be challenging for humans to determine the exact light intensity.…”

“…In previous studies, we have analysed the performance of ambient light sensors (ALSs) in smartphones [9]- [11] in addition to presenting the opportunity to enable external sensors for smartphones [4], [12]. The focus lied on sensors which are not available on smartphones on the one hand [4] and the calibration of existing sensors in smartphones on the other [12].…”

“…However, the problem with the internal light sensor is the large uncertainty in the ambient light measurements [2]. The differences in the measured ambient light intensities (E v ) are not only due to different smart phone models, also large differences between the same smart phone models have been shown [3].…”
