Evaluating Effects of Poultry Waste Application on Phosphorus Loads to Lake Tenkiller

Abstract: Lake Tenkiller located in Oklahoma, USA is a large midcontinent reservoir in a eutrophic state due to excess phosphorus (P) loads. Poultry waste application within the Illinois River Watershed in northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas has been identified as a major contributor to overall P loads within Lake Tenkiller. In this study, Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management Systems (GLEAMS) was applied to evaluate the effect of poultry waste application on P loads to Lake Tenkiller. Historical … Show more

“…Green farming refers to the behavior of individuals to actively reduce the negative impact of their farming decisions on the ecology (Stern, 2000), which is one of the primary measures to realize the sustainable development of the environment, society, and economy in grassland pastoral areas (Ke et al, 2019). Current research on green farming behavior and its influencing factors mainly focuses on livestock and poultry farming behavior in agricultural areas (Krishna et al, 2008;Guang et al, 2012;Jeon et al, 2015;Li et al, 2016;Pan, 2016;Hua et al, 2019;Xue et al, 2019;Li et al, 2020). There are few pieces of research on green farming behavior in grassland pasture areas.…”

“…P is also an important cause of eutrophication, often increasing the amount of plant and algae growth in lakes and reservoirs (Yan et al 2004;Jeon et al 2015). The amount of dietary P and the efficiency of its utilization in the chick's gut determine the amount of P in the excreta.…”

“…However, the annual amounts produced exceed the amounts required for the fertilizers needed for agricultural land in many countries [3]. Thus, it is imperative to manage CM properly, lest it cause serious environmental problems, including but not limited to foul smell, pest problems, eutrophication of surface water with a huge amount of nutrients [4], contamination of groundwater with pathogens [5] and heavy metals, and increasing global warming [6].…”
