“…Regarding phenolics, the values have been much higher in common eggplant than in scarlet eggplant, confirming previous results (Stommel and Whitaker, 2003;Prohens et al, 2007Prohens et al, , 2012Kaur et al, 2014). In this respect, phenolics are the main antioxidants of common eggplant (Plazas et al, 2013a(Plazas et al, , 2013bKaur et al, 2014), and the high values observed confirm that common eggplant is one of the vegetables with higher antioxidant capacity (Cao et al, 1996).…”

“…Interspecific hybrids again presented AA amounts similar to the ones of scarlet parental varieties, and so lower levels than the ones of common eggplant parents; however, interspecific hybrids presented an improvement in the AA/DHA ratio compared to scarlet eggplant parentals, which is of interest in breeding for antioxidant activity (Diamanti et al, 2011;San José et al, 2013). “…In this study, S. virginianum had been diagnosed to have highest amount of phenolics in both fruit and leaves compared to the other four genotypes. While S. torvum fruit has been reported to contain higher amount of phenolics as compared to that in S. menongena fruit (Kaur et al, 2014), our study showed higher amount of phenolics in S. melongena fruit as compared to the S. torvum. This may be due to the differences of varieties of S. melongena used in these two different experiments.…”

“…One such effort was to increase the production of vegetable or olericulture crops. Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is one type of vegetable that needs to be improved because it has many nutrients including protein, carbohydrate, fiber, iron, vitamins and calcium [22,12]. These plant also contains phytonutrient anthocyanin or nasunin on purple eggplant skin that highly efficacious for nutrition one of the most important organs of our body like the brain [1,24].…”
