Evaluating pasture and soil allowance of manganese for Kajli rams grazing in semi-arid environment

Abstract: The current research on the manganese (Mn) transfer from soil to plant as well as to grazing Kajli rams in the form of sampling periods was carried out under semi-arid environmental conditions. Forage, soil and blood plasma samples were collected during 4 months of the year after a 1-month interval, and Mn concentrations were assessed after wet digestion using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results showed that Mn concentration in soil ranged from 48.28 to 59.44 mg/kg, with incoherent augment and decli… Show more

“…Manganese is an essential element to the animal's metabolism (Pitropvska et al, 2014), in the formation of the organic bone matrix (Zhang et al, 2014) and as a component of several enzymes that are involved in many processes of the organism (Khan et al, 2015). According to NRC (2007) the Mn is not toxic to ruminants even at high levels, but an excess can affect the absorption of Fe.…”

“…Favorable effects resulting from pastoral practice (for example, biodiversity) are of fundamental importance to the health of the surrounding ecosystems ( 27 ). In addition, extensive grazing is also a major source of nutrients for the soil, as animal excreta contribute to the improvement of the soil structure by increasing its organic matter content and hereby maintaining an adequate plant cover ( 28 , 29 ). Sheep farming is one of the most important livestock activities in these pastoral areas, as it is well suited to the climate and the type of local fodder (natural pasture) available.…”

“…According with Hidiroglou (1979) and Kisidayova et al (2018), ruminants used only 1% of the Mn from the diet. That's way, for an optimum performance of ruminants, it is recommended minimum 40 mg Mn/kg in the forage (Khan et al, 2015;Hidiroglou, 1979). Below this limit, it is possible to appear imbalance of Mn bioavailability in ruminant feed.…”
