Evaluating web-based learning modules during an MSc programme in dental public health: a case study

Abstract: The introduction of web-based learning in dentistry has raised important educational questions about the efficacy of different teaching approaches. However, studies to date have drawn conclusions that appear conflicting, or at the least, ambiguous. In this paper, it will be argued that an over-simplistic view of education and an inappropriate use of methodology have both contributed to this confusion. These points will be illustrated through the use of a case study of web-based learning in dental public health. Show more

“…Experimental methods are difficult to apply in an educational environment because they involve many factors, correlations among individuals are common, and conclusions must be drawn carefully (Holt & Oliver, 2002). But only the rigorous evaluation of new learning methods can satisfy both: 1) the evidence-based scientific method currently applied in most disciplines, and 2) the need to select the most efficient methodsdwhile showing the way to improve them.…”

“…One method that is being used increasingly is computer-assisted learning (CAL) programs. [2][3][4][5][6][7] Some CAL programs are available on CD-ROM, 2 and others can be found on the Web. [3][4][5][6][7] Most are simply electronic textbooks or collections of multiple-choice questions and are based on the assumption that students are more interested in content that contains both text and animations than in traditional textbooks.…”
