Evaluation and Comparison of Conventional and Advanced Oxidation Processes for the Removal of PPCPs and EDCs and Their Effect on THM-Formation Potentials

Abstract: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and disinfection by-products are suspected to have potential adverse impact on humans and hence their elimination during drinking water treatment is often desired or regulated. Based on pilot-plant experiments with three raw water sources, conventional treatment poorly removed the selected PPCPs and EDCs, while ozone/H 2 O 2 and UV/H 2 O 2 (both) with conventional treatment effectively removed PPCPs and EDCs. In most of t… Show more

“…Yet, the high cost of ozone production, generation of bromate ions, and organic and solid by-products are the major constraints of this approach. Borikar et al [ 194 ] evaluated and compared conventional and advanced oxidation techniques for the elimination of EDCs and pharmaceutical chemicals from water. Their research findings revealed that ozone/H 2 O 2 , UV/H 2 O 2 , and conventional treatment significantly removed EDCs (97%) from water.…”

“…Ultraviolet light has a wide variety of applications in industry, including disinfection [1], lighting [2], photocatalysis, UV paint curing and UV glue curing [3,4]. The recent coronavirus outbreak has led to increased interest in finding solutions using ultraviolet light, specifically in the UV-C wavelength ranges (240 nm − 280 nm [1]), to achieve effective disinfection of surfaces and air.…”

“…Advanced oxidation processes such as ozone, ozone-hydrogen peroxide and UV-hydrogen peroxide have been reported as one of the effective processes in removing emerging contaminants (Westerhoff et al 2005;Ponnusamy et al 2019), but these operations may incur higher capital and operating cost for full-scale operation (Borikar et al 2014;Farzaneh et al 2020). Formation of by-products of higher toxicity is another concern that is often associated with the usage of advanced oxidation processes (Kudlek 2018).…”
