Evaluation and Comparison of MODIS Collection 6.1 and Collection 6 Dark Target Aerosol Optical Depth over Mainland China Under Various Conditions Including Spatiotemporal Distribution, Haze Effects, and Underlying Surface

Abstract: Modifications such as degrading the retrieval quality of mixed pixels in the coastline area and revising surface characterization scheme have been made to the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection 6.1 (C6.1) Dark Target (DT) aerosol optical depth (AOD) product to address inaccuracy over urban areas. In this study, comprehensive evaluations of modifications to the MODIS C6.1 DT AOD product, in comparison with Collection 6 (C6), are conducted over mainland China under different spatial… Show more

“…The MODIS/Aqua and MODIS/Terra Atmosphere L2 aerosol products (MYD04_L2-C61 and MOD04_L2-C61) were acquired from the Level-1 & Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System (LAADS) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC, http://ladsweb.nascom. nasa.gov, last access: 20 August 2020) (Huang et al, 2019). The AERONET level 2 data were acquired from the AERONET network website (http://aeronet.gsfc.nasa.gov/, last access: 20 July 2020) (Holben et al, 1998).…”

“…nasa.gov/sites/default/files/ModAtmo/modis_deep_blue_c61_changes2.pdf) algorithms already used in MODIS Collection-6.0 [60]. Collection 6.1 has a better performance against the AERONET data [ [61][62][63][64] with respect to previous MODIS products. In the present study, spectral AOD data are taken from the MODIS C6.1, which takes advantage of the merits of the MODIS Dark Target (DT) and Deep Blue (DB) algorithms.…”

“…These well-maintained and ex-tensively evaluated products (e.g. Wei et al, 2019;Huang et al, 2019;Zhang et al, 2022;Levy et al, 2013;Platnick et al, 2017) provide a robust dataset of collocated aerosol and cloud properties but may not remove all bias. Therefore, to support our analysis, we will pay particular attention to aerosol-cloud misclassification, especially at high cloud fractions.…”
