In transitional countries with arid climates, water stress is rising as the demand for water rises with population, economic growth, and intensive development of agriculture and energy and change in climate environment. In this regard, transitional nations plan in national programmes and policies alternative energy sources, sustainable food development, and circular water resource usage. However, these nations frequently approach current water, energy, and food planning without taking interactions of these resources and their impact on each other into account. This paper intends to demonstrate the significance of the water, energy, and food nexus approach for Central Asian countries in transition. Kazakhstan is used as an example of a resource-rich, transitional economy in Central Asia. Kazakhstan has set a goal of reaching a 50% share of renewable and alternative energy sources in electricity generation by the year 2050 to reduce water and energy poverty, improve water and energy efficiency, achieve carbon neutrality, and rank among the top 30 developed nations. To meet the water and renewable energy goal, bioenergy plantation is anticipated to develop between 2030 and 2050. The findings of paper show that total withdrawals for bioenergy increase from the reported data of 15503.68 m3 in 2020 to 32182.16 m3 in 2050 under a bioenergy-intensive scenario. The average total increase, or 75.5%, would be 16678.48 m3. As such, policymakers and stakeholders in Central Asian region and Kazakhstan needs to carefully design its national energy goals given its future increase of water withdrawals, and shortage environment.

Introduction: The tourism sector is recognized as an important sector of the economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. As a member state of the UN, Kazakhstan integrates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the State program for the development of the tourism industry. The incomplete implementation of the SDGs in Kazakhstan has causes of global and regional level. Materials and Methods: Statistical indicators for tourism in the Republic of Kazakhstan indicate a stable positive dynamics of the tourist flow in the country. The Almaty region has the highest rates of tourism activity, which has favorable historical, cultural and unique natural prerequisites. Results and Discussion: In the general tourist flow of the region, local tourism prevails. The indicator of inbound tourism in the Almaty region as a whole with the largest city of the Republic of Kazakhstan Almaty is the highest in the country. The target state setting for the prospective development of tourism assumes an increase in the share of tourism in the total GDP of the Republic of Kazakhstan by 2025 by 33%. Conclusions: In the study, in accordance with the concept of territorial and functional development of tourism and recreation in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the terminology of the urban planning direction, three key hierarchical levels of organization of tourist and recreational entities were formulated: regional, district, local – “tourist and recreational region”, “recreational agglomeration”, “tourist and recreational area”. The regional level corresponds to the Almaty tourist and recreational region, the recreational agglomeration - Taldykorgan and Almaty tourist and recreational agglomerations. Within the boundaries of the region, five tourist and recreational areas have been identified.

Water management strategies in the Ile River basin (Republic of Kazakhstan) have traditionally relied on historical data without fully considering the potential impacts of climate change. This gap can lead to underestimating the changes in temperature, precipitation patterns, and runoff, hindering effective water resource management. This study aimed to analyze how a changing climate is affecting the Ile River basin’s water regime. Specifically, it investigated trends in temperature, precipitation, and runoff within the basin, emphasizing the importance of incorporating these intra-annual variations when planning water management strategies and hydraulic structures. A detailed analysis of the long-term data was conducted, focusing on changes in meteorological indicators. This included average air temperatures and annual precipitation for elevations above and below 1500 m during cold and warm periods. The analysis aimed to identify and quantify trends of increase or decrease. Meteorological stations were strategically chosen to represent both arid and humid areas within the basin, accounting for the region’s significant altitude variations. The investigation revealed several key findings. Rising average annual air temperatures are leading to a larger area experiencing snowmelt and a longer warm period within the runoff formation zone. This directly impacts the water balance of the basin. Additionally, an increase in total annual precipitation, particularly during the cold season within the runoff formation zone, suggests a potential for future water resource growth, assuming that these trends persist. This study highlights the importance of considering intra-annual variations in water regimes when developing water management strategies. The observed changes in temperature and precipitation patterns within the Ile River basin necessitate adjustments to existing plans to ensure sustainable water resource management in a changing climate.
