Evaluation of a combination chemotherapy protocol including lomustine and doxorubicin in canine histiocytic sarcoma

Abstract: The protocol appeared well-tolerated, had some efficacy against canine histiocytic sarcoma in the study population and could be considered as an alternative to single-agent protocols; prospective comparison may be warranted.

“…In dogs the metastatic rate of HS is reported to be around 90% (Skorupski and others 2007, Cannon and others 2015). HS has a familial relationship in bernese mountain dogs and rottweilers (Tsai and others 2012).…”

“…It has also been reported to have some efficacy as a maintenance and induction agent for lymphoma in cats although its efficacy as an induction agent for mediastinal lymphoma is still questionable (Moore and others 1996, Peaston and Maddison 1999). Doxorubicin has also been reported to have some efficacy against HS (Cannon and others 2015). Doxorubicin was therefore considered the best first line drug to use while waiting for results of immunohistochemistry.…”

“…Additional modifications can be made as necessary in patients in which toxicity is a problem so that quality of life is maintained during treatment. Chemotherapy can be used before (neoadjunctive) or after (adjunctive) surgery for solid tumours and occasionally as a sole agent in the palliative setting (Page and others 1993, Chun and others 1997, Bacon and others 2008, Bailey and others 2008, Bulakowski and others 2008, Grant and others 2008, Kisseberth and others 2008, Rassnick and others 2008, Cooper and others 2009, Dominguez and others 2009, Lori and others 2010, Arnold and others 2011, Fidel and others 2011, Bray and Polton 2014, Selmic and others 2014, Cannon and others 2015, Culp and others 2015, Marconato and others 2015) (Table 5). Intracavitatory chemotherapy can be useful in some patients with neoplastic pleural effusion (Charney and others 2005); permanent pleural ports are well tolerated and facilitate delivery as well as allowing drainage of the effusion.…”

“…A quimioterapia é indicada como um dos tratamentos principais, tanto para o sarcoma histiocítico localizado, metastático ou não, quanto para o disseminado. A quimioterapia pode ser também utilizada após a realização da retirada cirúrgica ou de radioterapia para as neoplasias localizadas, o que indica um aumento na sobrevida do animal (CANNON et al, 2015;MARIANNI et al, 2015).…”
