Evaluation of a low-cost, low-power syringe pump to deliver magnesium sulfate intravenously to pre-eclamptic women in a Malawian referral hospital

Abstract: BackgroundMagnesium sulfate is an affordable and effective treatment for pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. In settings where infusion pumps are not available to regulate the flow rate of intravenous delivery, healthcare providers must administer magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) via time-consuming and painful, large-volume intramuscular injections. As an alternative to costly commercially available syringe pumps, we developed AutoSyp, an accurate, low-cost, and low-powered syringe pump designed to meet the needs and constr… Show more

“…Other types of medical devices, designed for use in LLMICs, have been proven effective in helping to achieve this. [30][31][32][33] Several designs of infusion pumps have already been developed, [34][35][36][37][38] however none have been widely deployed yet. Trialing the use of specifically designed infusion pumps could help improve the accessibility of quality of infant hydration, nutrition and drug delivery.…”

“…Another method is a syringe pump known as AutoSyp. This invention was designed to be low-cost, accurate, and low-powered to bypass the cost restrictions in countries with low GNI [ 44 ]. Therefore, it has been established that the drug MgSO4 itself is cost-effective, but the means of administering it is expensive.…”
