Evaluation of an accelerated hydrogen peroxide disinfectant to inactivate porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in swine feces on aluminum surfaces under freezing conditions

Abstract: BackgroundSince its emergence in 2013, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) spread rapidly throughout the country due, in part, to contaminated livestock trailers. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of an accelerated hydrogen peroxide (AHP) disinfectant for inactivating PEDV in swine feces on metal surfaces under freezing conditions. One 15.24 X 15.24 X 2.54 cm aluminum coupon, contaminated with swine feces, and randomly matched to one pig was the experimental unit. Eight treatment groups r… Show more

“…Accelerated hydrogen peroxide formulations have been assessed for 229E and PEDV. 121,157,158 In full strength exposure with one formulation, greater than 4log 10 reduction in 229E was achieved at 20°C for 1 minute in the presence of 5% serum. Virus-product exposure required Sephadex neutralization.…”

“…121 For PEDV and with a similar product, 1:16 and 1:32 dilutions have been assessed to inactivate virus. 157,158 Major reductions in titer have been observed for virus-laden feces. After exposure for 40 to 60 minutes, pig inoculation bioassays confirmed lack of infectivity.…”

“… 63 In another report, it demonstrates that disinfecting solutions as hydrogen peroxide decreased the viral particles of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. 64 The hydrogen peroxide, a coadjutant substance in contact lenses cleaning, it has been effectively performed in a rigid and soft contact lenses. 58 Hence, it is possible to think that in pandemic time, the interaction of disinfecting agent together with multipurpose solution and hand washing should minimize the infection risk in that population.…”
