Evaluation of an automated urine chemistry reagent‐strip analyzer

Abstract: We evaluated the Miles Inc., Clinitek Atlas Automated Urine Chemistry Analyzer for 11 tests: bilirubin, color, glucose, ketones, leukocyte esterase, nitrite, occult blood, pH, protein, specific gravity, and urobilinogen. The instrument uses a roll of reagent strips affixed to a clear plastic support; urine specimens are automatically pipetted onto these strips. The instrument measures the pads' color using reflectance colorimetry. Specific gravity is measured using a fiberoptic refractive index method. Four ho… Show more

“…The accuracy of the osmometer is ±2 mosm kg H 2 O -1 between 0 and 400 mosm kg H 2 O -1 . For the measurement of urine specific gravity, the Clinitek Atlas Ò device agrees within ±0.002 SG units in 95 % of the samples with a total solids meter (Lott et al 1995). Percentage change in plasma volume was determined according to Strauss et al (1951).…”

“…While some reliable digital portable models are now available, pH meters must be calibrated regularly, and they are more expensive than pH strips (also known as 'pH paperÕ or 'pH dipstripsÕ). The accuracy of pH strips for urine pH measurements compared to the pH meter has been assessed in studies on animals and humans with varied results [11][12][13][14]. There have also been some attempts to estimate urine pH levels based on several factors that can influence its value: diet composition, body surface area, acute water load, exercise (lactic metabolism), and a number of medications [15][16][17].…”

“…Instead of utilizing a chemical reaction, one of the latest automated urine chemistry reagent strip analyzers has incorporated a fibro-optic refractive index technology for SG measurement [48]. This method is claimed to be more accurate than the solid phase polyelectrolyte method of the reagent strip.…”
