Evaluation of antioxidant and anti-ulcerogenic effects of Eremurus persicus (Jaub & Spach) Boiss leaf hydroalcoholic extract on ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and protective effect of Eremurus persicus (Jaub & Spach) leaf hydroalcoholic extract (EPE) in preventing gastric ulcers induced by ethanol in rats. Wistar rats weighing 180-220 g were randomly divided into ve groups, included normal group, ethanol consumption group, ranitidine treatment experienced group, the recipient rats prepared by dose of 250 mg/kg plant extract, and the last group recipient the dose of 500 mg/kg plant extract. The gastric ulcer was induced… Show more

“…Ranitidine is a first-line drug for gastric ulcers, which reduces gastric acid and gastric enzyme activity and decreases the degree of oxidative stress in gastric tissues after hydrochloric acid-ethanol ingestion. 39 The MDA content shows that WJSS significantly attenuates lipid peroxidation in gastric tissues and reduces oxidative stress in gastric tissues. The MDA content of the ranitidine group was the lowest, and the antioxidant effect was the best.…”

“…Our findings were in line with those of previous studies indicating that 80% ethanol induces gastric ulcers by increasing ROS levels. The generation of high levels of ROS in gastric tissue plays a vital role in the formation of lipid peroxides, such as MDA, and is accompanied by antioxidative enzyme activity impairment in cells [ 42 , 43 ]. The results of the present study demonstrated that rats exposed to ethanol showed severe gastric lesions, increased free radical levels, and decreased levels of both antioxidative enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants.…”

“…To eliminate oxidative stress and prevent gastric ulcer formation, Malaysian medicinal plants rich in antioxidant compounds are widely used for gastroprotection and gastric ulcer healing as a traditional remedy. The high antioxidant activity of medicinal plants is mainly due to the presence of phenolic compounds [45,46] and other plant-derived compounds [47].…”
