Abstract:Crypthecodinium cohnii (dinoflagellate) and Schizochytrium sp. (thraustochytrid) are the main sources for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water fractions of alcohol aqueous extracts of these two microalgae and to provide a theoretical basis for comprehensive utilization. The antioxidant activity was determined by total antioxidant capacity (TAC) determination, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, ferrous ion-chelating ability (FICA) assay, and reducing power (RP) assay. The total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were also measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu and spectrophotometry methods, respectively. The results indicated that the extracts from these two microalgae possessed good antioxidant capacity. Analysis showed that most antioxidant performance indicators (TAC, DPPH, and RP) were positively correlated with the TPC of the extracts, suggesting that the phenolics might be the major components in C. cohnii and Schizochytrium sp., contributing to their antioxidative function. Therefore, the polar fractions of C. cohnii and Schizochytrium sp. could be further examined and considered for application in health products or cosmetics.

Objective: Oxidative stress which comes from hyperglycemia, it accelerates the development of cellular and vascular damage complications in diabetes, but the antioxidants may play a beneficial role in its prevention. Several plants extracts have an antioxidant activity and the ability to reduce oxidative stress in diabetes. Thus this study was conducted to investigate the effect of Beta vulgaris var cicla extract on zinc status, glucose concentration and antioxidant parameters in streptozotocin-diabetic rats fed zinc deficiency diet.Methods: Twenty-eight male albino (Wistar) rats were divided into four groups:Results: Body weight gain of zinc-deficient diabetic animals was lower than that of zinc-adequate diabetic animals. It was noticed also that inadequate dietary zinc intake increased glucose and MDA levels. In addition, zinc deficiency diet led to a decrease in zinc tissues, GSH concentration both GST and GSH-Px activities. However, Oral administration of Beta vulgaris extract significantly decreased both serum glucose and MDA (p<0.001) levels, with a significant increase in body weight gain (p<0.001), GSH concentration (p<0.05, P<0.001), GST (p<0.05, p<0.001) and GSHPx (p<0.001) activities.two groups fed a zinc-sufficient diet one non-diabetic and the other diabetic, while the others two diabetic groups were fed a zinc-deficient diet, one non-treated group and the other treated with the extract of Beta vulgaris var cicla. After 21 d of dietary manipulation, fasting animals were scarified. Blood glucose, tissues zinc (femur, liver, kidney), malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were evaluated. The aim of this study is to evaluate antioxidant activity of aqueous (Aq.E) and methanolic (Met.E) extracts of Zygophyllum album L. (Zygophyllaceae) and Arthrophytum scoparium (Chenpodiacea), two medicinal plant from Algerian Sahara used in traditional pharmacopoeia. The results showed that Aq.E have the heights yields 24% and 22.3% for Z. album and A. scoparium respectively. Qualitative analysis of showed that the Met.E of Z. album of had the highest amount of polyphenols (202.26±4.73 µg GAE/mg E) and flavonoids (15.77±0.94 µg QE/mg E). The antioxidant activity of extracts was evaluated by 2, 2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power assay. Results showed that the extracts of A. scoparium. Have the highest free radical scavenger activity in DPPH test (EC50=0.096±0.001 and 0.108±0.002 mg/ml for Met.E and Aq.E respectively). In addition, the results of reducing power assay demonstrated that Met.E of Z. album had the highest effect with 2399.65±12.31 µg ascorbic acid equivalent/mg E.Our results showed that the methanolic extract reported a considerable free radicals scavenging activity and reducing effect, may be due to their richness on polyphenols and flavonoids.
