Evaluation of antitumor activity of Artemisia capillaris extract against hepatocellular carcinoma through the inhibition of IL-6/STAT3 signaling axis

Abstract: Interleukin-6 (IL-6)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway plays critical roles in the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Artemisia capillaris (AC) has been widely used to treat various liver diseases including HCC as a herbal medicine. Increasing evidence indicates that A. capillaris can efficiently suppress the proliferation of human hepatoma cells, and ethanol extract of A. capillaris exhibits dose-dependent antiproliferative effects against Huh7 and HepG2 human hepatoma cells mediated by inhibition of cancer cell migration via interleukin-6 (IL-6)-dependent regulation of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) pathway [24].
