Evaluation of Bond Properties of Reinforced Concrete with Corroded Reinforcement by Uniaxial Tension Testing

Abstract: The degradation of the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams due to corrosion has a profoundly negative impact on the structural safety and integrity of a structure. The literature is limited with regard to models of bond characteristics that relate to the reinforcement corrosion percentage. In this study, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on specimens with irregular corrosion of their reinforced concrete. The development of cracks in the corroded area was found to be dependent on the level of… Show more

“…Consequently the tension‐stiffening of the corroded reinforced concrete element, being affected by both the variation of the bond‐slip law, and by the crack pattern on the element due to the degradation, is influenced by the corrosion phenomenon, also for low corrosion levels. Unfortunately, few studies are present in the scientific literature on this topic, and the available ones refer to small specimens characterized by a maximum length between 500 and 1,000 mm . In this case, the transfer length can become comparable to the length of the corroded specimen and consequently the crack pattern is influenced by the dimension of the element itself and cannot be representative of the actual behavior.…”

“…Designing and maintaining these systems for a particular service lifetime have been recognized as critical issues worldwide. RC structures are characterized by high durability; however, during their operational life, they are subjected to internal and external actions that affect performance, serviceability and safety (Imam et al 2015;Kim et al 2016;Marquez-Peñaranda et al 2016;Morga and Marano 2015;Sánchez-Silva and Klutke 2016). Nowadays, many deteriorated structures are evaluated for possible repair and continued service because their replacement would be economically unfeasible.…”

“…Chloride ingress is among the principal causes of deterioration of reinforced concrete (RC) structures in chloridecontaminated environments leading to important serviceability and safety reductions as well as increasing repair and maintenance costs Schoefs 2012, 2015;Imam et al 2015;Kim et al 2016). For example, about 173,000 bridges on the interstate system of the United States are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete due in part to corrosion (Bhide 2008;Pritzl et al 2014;Radlińska et al 2014).…”
