Evaluation of bowel distension and bowel wall visualization according to patient positions during administration of oral contrast media for CT enterography

Abstract: Supine and sitting positions during the administration of oral contrast media provided better ileal distension than the right decubitus position in obtaining CTE. Advances in knowledge: The performance of CTE largely depends on adequate luminal distension and wall visualization. As the terminal ileum is the predominant site of small bowel pathology for inflammatory bowel disease, the supine or sitting position would be preferable for patients who are suspected of having small bowel pathology.

“…[32,33] The Mann-Whitney U test (M-W) was used to compare 2 independent groups, presenting Z-value of statistics (Z) and P coefficient (P). [34][35][36] A 5% inference error and a significance level of P .05 indicating statistically significant differences or dependencies were accepted. The statistical analysis was conducted using the Statistica v. 13.1 software (StatSoft, Poland) in the Department of Medical Informatics and Statistics with E-learning Lab of our University.…”

“…The distribution of the examined parameters was evaluated on the basis of the Shapiro-Wilk W test [32,33] . The Mann–Whitney U test (M–W) was used to compare 2 independent groups, presenting Z -value of statistics ( Z ) and P coefficient ( P ) [34–36] …”

“…The extent of bowel distension was evaluated using the following grading scale: 1 = all bowel loops are collapsed without luminal separation, and the walls cannot be recognized; 2 = adequate bowel distension is visible in less than 50%; 3 = adequate bowel distension is visible in 50–80% of the segments; 4 = more than 80% of bowel loops are adequately distended; and 5 = all bowel loops in the segment are adequately distended. Adequate bowel distension was defined as bowel diameter more than 1.5 cm ( 16 ). For consistent interpretation, jejunal loops were defined as small bowel loops located on the upper and left sides of the abdominal wall, with thicker plicae circulares and densely arranged folds.…”

“…For consistent interpretation, jejunal loops were defined as small bowel loops located on the upper and left sides of the abdominal wall, with thicker plicae circulares and densely arranged folds. The ileal loops were characterized by thinner circular plicae with loose arrangement, mainly in the lower compartment of the abdomen ( 16 ).…”
