Evaluation of brodifacoum against T. indica, M. hurrianae and R. rattus

Abstract: Brodifacoum was evaluated in the laboratory against the two gerbils, Tatera indica and Meriones hurrianae and the house rat, Rattus rattus. The acute oral LD50 for these rodents was found to be 0.10 mg/kg, 0.083 mg/kg and 0.77 mg/kg respectively. Feeding tests with 0.002% and 0.005% brodifacoum produced a 100% mortality after a 3-day feeding period in the gerbils and after a 4-day period in R. rattus. The anticoagulant is toxic at both the concentrations to all three species but is less palatable in comparison… Show more

“…To achieve cent per cent mortality with warfarin and fumarin at 0-025% level (the recommended concentration) the black rats had to feed for a continuous period of 10 and 12 days, respectively (Bhat and Sujatha, 1986). The LDso value of brodifacoum for R. rattus was around 0-7 mg/kg body weight (Mathur and Prakash, 1981). This dose would be contained in about 14-0 g of 0-005% brodifacoum bait.…”

“…[ 22 ], and that of brodifacoum is 0.35 mg/kg b.w. [ 23 ]. To convert these to human LD50 levels, the average U.S. adult was found to be 80.5 kg [ 24 ] and average daily per capita U.S. consumption of cheese was determined to be 38.52 g [ 1 ], which amounts to about one or two slices of cheese per day.…”
