Evaluation of Cedrela gum as a binder and bioadhesive component in ibuprofen tablet formulations

Abstract: The compressional, mechanical and bioadhesive properties of tablet formulations incorporating a new gum obtained from the incised trunk of the Cedrela odorata tree were evaluated and compared with those containing hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC). Compressional properties were evaluated using Hausner's ratio, Carr's Index, the angle of repose, and Heckel, Kawakita and Gurnham plots. Ibuprofen tablets were prepared using the wet granulation method. Bioadhesive studies were carried out using the rotating cyli… Show more

“…5 Natural gums have been found to be biocompatible and non-irritating, and they possess excellent binding and bioadhesive properties. 6 However, there may be a need to modify these gums in order to achieve the desired formulation effects. Microwave irradiation has provided a convenient means of modifying polymers by reducing processing time.…”

“…Increase in D t as the concentration of starch in the formulations increased may be related to the formation of a mucilaginous viscous barrier in the presence of water, thus inhibiting disintegration. The thickness of the barrier is directly related to the concentration of the starch binder [23] .…”

“…There was an increase in peak detachment force with the increasing concentration of polymer in all the formulations, which agrees with the previous report that an increasing concentration of bioadhesive polymer is capable of increasing the binding potential. 5 The polymers, being hydrophilic, absorb water, swell and these enhance mucoadhesion with the mucosal layer. The swelling led to formation of bonds and a spatial network between the mucous membrane and the adhesive polymer in the microspheres.…”

“…4 Previous works showed cedrela gum to have mucoadhesive properties. 5 Enterolobium gum, produced by the Enterolobium cyclocarpus tree family Mimosoideae of the Leguminosae, is commonly known as the guanacaste or elephant-ear tree. It is a species of flowering tree, native to Central America and now widely distributed throughout the tropics where it is planted mainly as a roadside or garden tree.…”
