Evaluation of chemical constituents and antioxidant activity of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) cultivars

Abstract: This research was undertaken to evaluate the sugars, organic acids, phenolic compositions and antioxidant capacities of sweet cherry cultivars (Van, Noir de Guben, Larian and 0-900 Ziraat) grown in Turkey. High-performance liquid chromatographic methods were used to identify and quantify four sugars (sucrose, glucose, fructose and sorbitol) and four organic acids (malic, citric, shikimic, and fumaric acid). The major organic acid was found as malic acid (8.54-10.02 g kg )1 of FW). With regard to sugars, glucos… Show more

“…These variations may be due to differences in maturation stages (Serradilla and others ) and cultivars (Usenik and others ). These findings are close to those of results of Usenik and others () and Liu and others (); however, they are lower than the results of Kim and others (), Kelebek and Selli (), and Serra and others ().…”

“…The darker fruits showed higher antioxidant activity levels and the same results were observed by Gonzalez‐Gomez and others () and Liu and others (). The data obtained were also comparable to the results of Kelebek and Selli (). DPPH • , faster and more reproducible method and the values changed significantly among sweet cherry cultivars ( P < 0.05).…”

“…It is rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds, having relatively low caloric content while containing substantial amounts of anthocyanins, polyphenols and high antioxidant activity. [2][3][4] The sweet cherry composition has been extensively studied due to its impact on human health, since it is claimed to have several potential health benefits in relation to cancer, diabetes, inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. [1,5,6] Since sweet cherry is a relatively seasonal and perishable fruit, is not always available to the consumer as a fresh fruit, [7] but it can be processed into juice, meeting the consumer demand for drinks with potential health benefits.…”
