Evaluation of choroidal thickness in retinitis pigmentosa using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography

Abstract: Submacular choroidal thickness, as measured by SD-OCT EDI, is significantly reduced in patients with RP, but did not correlate with visual acuity or retinal thickness in RP patients. Further research is needed to understand better  the pathophysiological significance of the choroidal alterations present in RP.

“…It may be related to the characteristic photoreceptor degeneration of CD, which could cause choroidal thinning. A similar thinning of the choroid has been reported in patients with other inherited retinal dystrophies and in animal models (4,5,10) . Destruction of the RPE cells has been reported in animal models of disease responsible for secondary choriocapillaris atrophy (5,11) .…”

“…Destruction of the RPE cells has been reported in animal models of disease responsible for secondary choriocapillaris atrophy (5,11) . A requirement for vascular endothelial growth factor, which is produced by RPE cells, has been demonstrated for choroidal maintenance; therefore, this growth factor may play a role in choroidal thinning (4,12) . The retinas, and especially the photoreceptor cells, are the most metabolically active tissues in the body, and their oxygen consumption is faster than that seen in other tissues (13) .…”
