Hypersensitivity of teeth is a common clinical condition usually associated with exposed dentinal tubules. It is predominantly found in patients belonging to 20-60 years of age and most commonly affects the canines and premolars of both the arches. This article concisely reviews the etiology, patho-physiology, mechanism and management of dentin hypersensitivity. Treatment of dentin hypersensitivity should start with an accurate diagnosis and removal of the etiology. Differential diagnosis should be made and all other probable causes should be excluded. An often neglected phase of clinical management of dentin hypersensitivity is the identification and treatment of the causative factors. By removing the etiological factors, the condition can be even prevented from occurring or recurring. There are various treatment modalities available which can be used at home or may be professionally applied. The “at home” desensitizing agents include toothpastes, mouthwashes or chewing gums and they act by either occluding the dentinal tubules or blocking the neural transmission. The in-office treatments include application of potassium nitrate, fluorides, adhesive resins, copal varnish and oxalates. This article also discusses the recent treatment options like carbonated nano hydroxyapatite crystals bioglass, calcium silicate derivative of Portland cement, lasers and casein phosphopeptide.

During the course of the oral examination or during procedures, dentists, auxiliaries, and other healthcare personnel have an increased chance of getting exposed to various pathogens. There were about 80 known herpes viruses, and in that at least eight of them are known to cause infections in humans. Herpes labialis also known as cold sores is the most common orofacial form of recurrent HSV infection. The dentist should have a clear knowledge of herpetic infections because they are frequently exposed to patients who suffer from HSV infections. A close-ended questionnaire comprising 10 questions regarding encompassing major aspects of herpetic infections were prepared and distributed among dentists through an online survey. Data were tabulated and analyzed by computing the percentage response for each question. Proper awareness should be created among dentists for treating patients in their clinical practice. From this survey, it can be concluded that the majority of dental practitioners were aware of oral herpetic infections.

Awareness on the Use of Steroidal Drugs among Basketball Players in School

Background: The use of performance enhancing drugs by pre-teenagers and teenagers has increased tremendously over the past decade. The trend is driven by multiple factors, including the decrease in the age of participation in competing sports, the increase in popularity of team sports. The questions were distributed through an online survey planet link to the study professionals including 69 basketball professionals. The participants were explained in detail about the purpose. The questions were carefully studied and the corresponding answers were marked by the participants the data was collected and statistically analysed. From the current study, about 83.3% of the population were aware of the use of steroidal drugs in basketball and 16.7% were not aware of it. Majority of the population are aware of the use of steroidal drugs in sports and they are aware of the harmful effects of it.
